  • Southwest France Old Barn

These are a series of photographs of the old barn at my grandmother's home. She passed away at the age of 94 in 2001. The barn itself is interesting as it dates back to the middle ages. The church in the village - Le village de Saint Michel de Montaigne - is classified as a historical site and it was built in the 12th century. My uncle says that the barn is almost as old as the church. Over the years parts of the barn have been repaired and probably enlarged. Nonetheless it is fascinating to look at something as old, the wood oak beams and the center post, which appear rotted but are actually solid as the wood is almost petrified. I know, it doesn't pass building code in California. But this isn't in California and we aren't drinking California wine over here either ... Vive le Grand Cru!

I think this is safe, it's been standing like this for 600 years or more.

I agree the roof framing would look horrible with modern joist hangers.

These tools were never available at Home Depot or Wallmart.

I like to think that many relatives of past generations opened and closed this door. Note, the cobwebs are from this century,

There are pigeon dwellings, but no pigeons. Check out the stone ledge.
