Joe and Charles about 80 miles west of the Mediterranean, along a small back-raod, at the top of a small pass - so many I can't remember all the names - heading into a little fog which was much appreciated to cool down a bit. Today's ride, the 4th stage, was 124 miles with 6600 ft climbing. The total stats for the first 4 days are 405 miles and 24,555 ft of climbing. This was, up to this point, the "easy" traverse across the base of the Pyrenees mountains to the Mediterranean sea. Tomorrow the high mountain stages begin as we make our way back to the Atlantic in 8 stages ... oh yeah!

Joe requested a photo of him feeding the horses for his wife! He paid the price several seconds later when he found out the hard way that the fence was electrically charged - a serious demonstration of devotion to his wife or a klutz move, you make the call. I keep telling everyone "savoir faire," either you got it or you don't.

The landscape on the eastern end of the Pyrenees is distinctly different from the Atlantic side. I'll let the images below speak for themselves.

A common site in the south of France are roads lined with trees for shade. I'm guessing that these were probably planted 100 years ago or more. They are unfortunately a serious road hazard for cars, especially those that drive too fast - most French people - and lose control. Remember this year's Tour de France had an incident caused by a driver avoiding one of these trees and swerving into the racers.

The town of Collioure, on the Mediterranean coast, where we are spending 2 nights and relaxing for our first of two rest days. All these people are enjoying a free concert along the water front. Good music!
