  • Cycling in the Pyrenees

We have just completed two absolutely amazing days in the Pyrenees, with perfect weather and epic views on all the passes. I have posted a lot of photos, but I could not help myself as there are so many good shots. Above is the beginning of the decent of the Col d'Aubisque heading west. Joe waves as he begins his decent. Some of the others are up ahead, looking like they are about to fall off the earth.

The peaks above the town of Saint Lary Soulan, where we spent 2 nights and a full day of rest. Saint Lary Soulan is just about halfway between the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The flash went off unintentionally on this picture, but the effect is rather stylish.

Roads carved into the mountainside, a cyclist's dream.

A little ways up the Col d'Aspin. The following pictures are on the same col but farther up. Al agrees that this is hard to beat.

The higher you go the more spectacular it gets. Charles and Dan.

We started the day way down in that valley all the way back. Geoff all alone.

Rebecca with the Camel-Back, but it did not slow her down.

Joe and Oral, smiling and suffering all at once.

The top of the Col d'Aspin. If you take a moment you can see the road snaking it's way up the mountain.

Al reaches the top. The mountain tops in the background are peaks we climbed the previous days.

    Cycling in the Pyrenees

The famous Col du Tourmalet, on the east side. Charles less than a km from the top.

Joe's body posture says it all at the top of the Col du Tourmalet. This is the view looking west.

Tourmalet west side. After a little food and drink Joe's strength and spirits pick back up.

    Cycling in the Pyrenees

Between the Col de Soulor and the Col d'Aubisque there are traffic stops.

Crepes at the summit of the Col d'Aubisque ... very necessary.

The salami stand at the local market near Saint Lary Soulan ... yummy.

The valley between Lourdes and the Tourmalet.
